Michelle+Paul Oberg: Downtown Milwaukee Wedding

When Michelle+ Paul are together, they radiate love. He gives her that look that is meant for her alone. She smiles at him in a way that melts his heart. He kisses her and you can almost see her heart skip a beat. It’s such a beautiful thing. And my camera was LOVING it! From their sweet glances to their fabulous bridal party; they certainly knew how to rock it! Michelle+Paul, it was such  joy to share in your day. I’m glad that I was able to be there to capture your laughter, tears, joy, love and GORGEOUSNESS! I pray that your marriage is blessed and that you build it on the solid Rock. xoxo stacy

Coffee Talk Monday #34

Okay, I’m back! I know I left you hanging last week but now I’m back and ready to rock it :). I’m officially back in Arizona until the fall and have been attempting to find my way back to a little thing called ‘routine’. To be honest, I’ve forgotten what that looks like!

There are several things about Arizona that I missed while I was gone this summer. 110 degree weather was not one of them! Between my enormous amount of editing and the intense heat, I am quickly becoming a hermit in my own home :). Maybe I’ll be able to come out of hiding by November!

A quick little story about overcoming obstacles. One Arizona night last month, I realized my night would not be complete without ‘Breyers Mint Chip Ice Cream’. I mean, it’s THE BEST! So I got in my car and drove just down the street to the nearest Quick Trip. (side note: having a quick trip near your house is both a blessing and a curse!). I knew what I wanted. I was on a mission. But when I walked up to the freezer and saw my deliciously decadent ice cream staring at me, there was obstacle number 1 staring back at me. The price tag. (side note: I’m a bargain shopper and love me some savings anytime I can get em’!). Now as much as I wanted my breyers fix, I couldn’t shake the thought that Wal-mart sells it for at least $2 cheaper and its right down the street. So I got back in my car and made the mile drive to the neighborhood Walmart. (side note: it was a Saturday early evening). I pulled into the parking lot and it was PACKED. After driving around the parking lot a few times, I finally found a parking spot. I got out of my car and walked into the store with my eye on the prize. That was until I saw the lines that seemed never-ending! (side note: do not attempt to go to Wal-mart a mile from ASU the weekend prior to school starting). There was no way I was waiting in a line that long. My ice cream probably would have melted before I even got home! Now most people would have probably thrown in the towel at this point. It is just ice cream, right? WRONG! I was on a mission folks! So I made one last attempt. Got back in my car and drove to the nearest Fry’s where I finally purchased my dairy delight. I bet you can imagine how good that ice cream tasted when I finally got home and devoured it. Moral of the story: don’t stand in the way of a girl and her ice cream!

I love surprises. I love being surprised but I also love being the one doing the surprising. You may know that Joe is a huge Packer fan, but he’s never had the chance to go to a game or see Lambeau field. Thanks to the generosity of my brother and sister-in-law, I was able to give Joe one of the best presents of his life: a ticket to the Packers vs Bears game on Christmas Day. Every year, my brother and sister-in-law draw one game from her family’s season tickets. When they drew the Christmas Day game, they knew just who to offer their third ticket to. Emily presented me with the opportunity and I jumped at the chance at being ‘wife of the year’. I debated on whether I wanted to wait until Christmas morning to tell him, but I just couldn’t! So instead I thought it would be fun if I came up with a fun way of telling him the news. I flew back to AZ last Monday and told Joe that I had a present for him. I pulled out a poem that I had written for him. I’m pretty sure at that point he was probably thinking “ohhhh, one of those presents…”. Little did he know that the poem was just a means of revealing his sweet prize. It went a little something like this:

I know that you think writing poems is no fun,

but I really like them, so I wrote you one.

You’ve been such a blessing since you came into my life;

and life’s only gotten better since I became your wife.

You’re my constant encourager, pushing me to dream big,

you see the tree when all I can see is the twig.

You’ve put wants aside so that I can could live out my dream,

and I couldn’t ask for a better man to be on my team.

You’ve done so much for me, I thought I’d get you something fun,

before you start daydreaming, no, it’s not a new gun!

In all of our years together, I’ve never seen you cry,

although I’ll probably never see it, I thought I might try.

Maybe this will do it:

you, the Packers, the Bears,

OH MY!

On December 25th with Emily + my bro,

you’ll be in Lambeau field braving the snow!

I hope that you have the time of your life,

love your ever-so-blessed, grateful wife.

I think it’s safe to say that this was probably his favorite poem, ever! If a camera were present, it probably would have captured something like this after I told him…

Candice+Adam Gavran: Wisconsin Club Wedding

Candice+Adam are like rays of sunshine to all of those around them. They walk into a room and the air instantly becomes warmer + brighter from their presence. In fact, even the sunshine itself couldn’t stay away from this couple. The day began with pouring rain, leaving little hope for the outdoor ceremony they had been planning for 15 months. But like a story from a fairytale, the rain ceased and the sun burst through just in time to join them for their picture perfect day. The best part about this couple is, ultimately, it didn’t matter what the weather did that day. It didn’t matter who showed up or who didn’t. All that really mattered was that this was the day that they would become husband and wife and no amount of obstacles could ever take away from that. This was their day; no matter what. And it was perfect…

Candice+Adam, you’ve truly found a place in our hearts. We are so blessed when our client relationships grow into a friendship that goes beyond the wedding day. You both are such wonderful people and we look forward to continuing our friendship with you both. Thank you for choosing us to celebrate with you and document this amazing milestone. We hope to be a part of many more to come! xoxo stacy + joe

Candice is a culinary student who plans to start her own cupcake business: Candicakes. So their ‘cupcake’ wedding cake couldn’t be more fitting.

She also incorporated a ‘cookie bar’ with homemade cookies (she even had a gluten free one for us!)

First dance sweetness…

And I’ll end with the sweetest of sweet father/daughter dance photos. Chills!

A letter to Me

It’s the last day of August. To me, that has always meant that summer is coming to a close and fall is just around the corner (although, us here in Phoenix probably will experience ‘summer’ for another couple months!). As I sit here back in my home office after a summer full of weddings in Wisconsin, I got to thinking about my photography journey over the past 2 years.

It was June 2009 when I got my first DSLR camera. I remember how I felt when it came in the mail; the feeling of “this is better than Christmas” mixed with “ok…now what?”. I opened the box while sitting on the couch in our front room (my now office) and carefully extracted each piece from the box like a child who had just found a trunk full of treasure. I quieted the butterflies in my stomach that distracted me from giving my full attention to my new found gem. My enthusiasm quickly turned to “what the heck did I get myself into?”. As I flipped through the manual, I got about as far as “set power switch to on” before feeling like I had entered a foreign language 300 level class by accident. It’s amazing how quickly we can become defeated. It takes very little to convince ourselves that we don’t have what it takes. But I was determined to prove myself wrong…

I came to the conclusion that my camera wasn’t going to take pictures for me, I had to do the work. So I got to it! I read blogs that broke down the “techy” stuff into something I could understand and then I practiced what I had learned. I started with inanimate objects like flowers, nicknacks and anything else I could find around the house. Not the most fun things to photograph by any means, but at least they were willing participants! I practiced on Joe whenever I could convince him and eventually was ready to reach out to my friends. In those first 2 months of owning my camera, I was shooting non-stop and taking in as much information as I could.

It was July 2009 (just a month after getting my camera) when I was presented with an opportunity that gave me the extra push I needed. My childhood best friend, who currently lives in Mexico, was going to be coming back to Wisconsin in August. We had not seen each other since the previous summer at my wedding and I was dying to see her. The problem was….we had no money for a flight. We had just paid for a new camera and bought a mac computer and with me only working part-time, funds were tight. Then I came up with an idea: “What if I can book one paid shoot back in Wisconsin? Then that would cover my flight!”. Joe, being the business-minded man that he is, couldn’t argue with that and wished me luck. With nothing but a wish and a prayer, I put myself out there on FB and announced that I was now booking shoots for August 2009 in Wisconsin. Gulp...now all I could do was wait. To my surprise, people started responding. One shoot. Two shoots. Three shoots……when it was all said and done SEVEN PAID SHOOTS. This was about the time that those feelings of “this is better than Christmas” mixed with “ok…now what?” came streaming back in. All at once I had to learn about my camera, how to build a website, proper posing, naming my business, designing a logo, photoshop, blogging, customer service, ahhhhhh! I’ll be totally honest when I say I didn’t know which way was up at that point. I was doing the best that a 2 months-in photographer could. And while I was making a TON of mistakes along the way, I knew after that summer that this is what I was supposed to be doing.

In a way, the ‘current me’ feels inspired by the ’2 years ago me’. The ’2 years ago me’ didn’t have it all figured out (nor does the current me by any means) but her passion outweighed her fear of failure. ’2 years ago me’ knew so much less about photography than ‘current me’ knows now, but she put herself out there anyway. ’2 years ago me’ sat on a couch with a product in her hands that she had no clue about and said “I’m going to do something great with this someday“. ’2 years ago me’ learned that the failures will outnumber the successes but that they can be even more influential. ‘Current me’ doesn’t ever want to forget where I started from. I don’t want to forget that I’ve made it through really tough months and times when I thought I should give up. Sometimes all we can see is where we’re not and we forget to recognize where we are in comparison to where we’ve been. Sometimes we just need to remind ourselves…

Dear Current Me,

You’ve come a long way! Remember when you took that photo of Joe holding a mirror and edited it black and white with his reflection in color? That’s kinda embarrassing! How about your first paid shoot? You were so bummed because you had to deal with spotty light and kids who didn’t want to be photographed and overall, you thought that you failed. They loved the photos though, didn’t they? You’ve come a long way from editing every image in photoshop, using 3-5 actions per image and overusing eye-sharpen! One thing I want you to remember: it’s okay to fail. You’re not above failure. No one is. Don’t forget how blessed you are to be doing what you love and never stop giving glory to the One who gave you the skills and desire to do so. Photography is such a beautiful gift, but your business does not define who you are. Whether the phone is ringing off the hook or not at all, your worth does not change. Your business has been blessed because the Lord has allowed it, so continue to trust Him to do with it what He wills. Keep loving what you do and the people that you meet through photography. Let your motivation always be: to capture beautiful moments that point back to the One who gave us love, laughter, beauty and every good thing. I can’t wait to see what the next year brings!

Love,

2 years ago Me

Lindsi - Stacy,

Thank you so much for posting this. I’ve been sitting in this exact rut for a few months now. I’ve had 1 paid shoot in the last year and I thought it was a train wreck, but they loved the photos. I live in an area where no one will hire me and have clients on the other side of the country that want to hire me, but can’t pay to fly me out. I’ve felt like giving up on a daily bases the last month or so. This post is so encouraging to me!

Thank you again. :)

Sara - Love this Stacy! I’m glad to know that other photographers out there have embarrassing stories to share like over using eye sharpening in photoshop, hahaha. And I love seeing that you started with a 50d. That’s what I have right now! :)

August 31, 2011 - 1:20 pm

Denise Nicole - I love you girl!!! You are just as precious as they come. Your work is gorgeous. A piece of art and the best part is the beauty you have inside of you. Makes me want to put you in my pocket and take you with me everywhere just so I know that I have a little ray of sunshine in my day whenever I need it. xoxo

Candice LaCanne - Stacy, you are so inspiring! I love that you are so down to earth<3 Your words are helping so many people. Not everyone is brave enough to say things that they want to like this. With your talent, personality, kindness, energy… your going to go so far in life. I'm so happy for you! (and 2yrs ago you ;p )

September 1, 2011 - 8:07 pm

September 13, 2011 - 8:58 pm

Shannon K. - This is coming at the right time for me. Really. I have to hope and pray that He allows it for me too. Because currently, I feel like it is FAR from happening. Seeing it go so fast for some, I can’t help but leave me feeling like I am doing something wrong. Boo!

Reynolds Family- Milwaukee Family Session

I adore this family. I have known Krista (mom to the 3 beautiful boys) since I was just a little kid and it has been so fun to reconnect after all these years and spend time with her wonderful family. I had the chance to photograph them last summer and was looking forward to another good work out because these boys are not ones to sit still! They did not disappoint :). They had grown and changed so much in just one year and it was so fun to see their little personalities coming out even more so. This is why I think it’s so great to have family photos done annually. Sometimes parents don’t realize how much has changed in a year’s time until they see it through the photos. This year we were joined by the boys’ grandparents and uncle Matt as well. This family was so completely raw and real which is exactly what I hope for in a family shoot. The result is images that are true to who the family is and what the kids are like, not some “say chesse” version of them. This family is full of life, energy and spontaneity. Let’s meet them, shall we?

Meet the ever-so-cute Mason (the oldest)

Jackson (the middle child): isn’t he SO adorable??

And the baby boy, Carter

I just crack up when I look at these two images with Dustin (dad) holding onto Jackson’s shirt collar. Told ya those boys were on the move!

The whole big, beautiful family

Check out these studly guys!

I finally came up with something that the boys loved: a screaming competition

Even Carter wanted to get in on the fun!

All that screaming tired Cater out…

…but the other two boys were still ready to have some fun!

A bit later, Cater got his second wind…

…but it didn’t last long!

Onto some couple shots :)

Hello gorgeous!

This is what happens after 5 seconds of trying to be serious. LOVE it!

‘Grandma + Grandpa’s turn :)

Of course we had to get some with the boys with Grandma, Grandpa and Uncle Matt

And one more of the happy family

And that my dears, is a real-life family shoot! xoxo stacy
