So now we had a welcome distraction from old Friends reruns and the rustling of the air conditioner in the hotel room. We started Bella’s adoption paperwork, under the impression that it would take about 2-4 weeks to process. We submitted the initial paperwork on Thursday, June 29th and got a call from the social worker later that night that shocked the heck out of us. We were trying to pass the time at a rundown plaza movie theater when I got the call:
“All of your paperwork is being processed. I talked to Bella’s birth mom and she said she is ready to sign and can do it this coming Tuesday. We can have all the paperwork ready by then. Does that work for you two?” she said.
Tuesday?! As in five days from now, Tuesday?? We were not expecting this (something we should have gotten used to by now!). But how in the heck was this going to work? What are you doing here God? Here we were in Oregon waiting for our son to be born any day and now we just found out that we were approved to go pick up our daughter in Nevada?! So many questions flooded our minds. What the heck do we do?!
We finally came to this conclusion: The baby boy was not yet born and we didn’t know when he would be. Bella, on the other hand, was waiting for us and her birth mother was ready to place her with us. Would leaving now to get her make things more complicated? Absolutely. But that wasn’t a good enough reason to keep us away from our girl. So we decided then and there that we needed to go get our daughter, no matter how complicated it would make things….
